If you’re visiting the highland or mountain areas, it’s best to prepare with down jackets, gloves, and scarves to stay cozy.

Also, many shops and facilities in Nasu close for the winter season, with some starting their closures as early as late November.

9:30 AM – Arrive in Nasu
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Nasu-Shiobara Station.
Public transportation in Nasu is not very convenient, so it’s recommended to rent a car upon arrival.
There are many car rental companies around Nasu-Shiobara Station.
Since autumn is a busy season, be sure to make your reservation early once your travel dates are set.

10:00 AM – Nasu Stained Glass Museum
First, we’ll head to the popular spot in Nasu, the Nasu Stained Glass Museum.
It’s about a 30-minute drive from Nasu-Shiobara Station.
The museum is designed to resemble a medieval English nobleman’s mansion, featuring antique stained glass primarily from the 1800s.
You’ll be enchanted by the beautiful architecture, stunning stained glass, meticulously trimmed lawns, and the soothing sounds of the pipe organ, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into the picturesque hills of England.
This venue is also used for filming movies and dramas, as well as hosting weddings, so you’re sure to capture gorgeous photos no matter where you take them.
The museum offers a stained glass-making workshop as well, making it a great way to create lasting memories from your trip.

2:00 PM – Enjoy Day-Use Hot Springs in Nasu
While Nasu is often associated with resort areas and imperial villas, it is also home to historic hot springs.
The history of these hot springs dates back to 630 AD during the Asuka period. They are mentioned in the “Tale of the Heike” from the Kamakura period and were visited by the famous Edo-period poet Matsuo Basho, reflecting the rich history and tradition of this hot spring area.
Why not take some time to relax and unwind, soothing your daily fatigue in the hot springs?
There are a total of 12 hot springs around Mount Nasu (Chausudake), some of which require a few hours of hiking to reach the more secluded ones.
For day-use hot springs, Nasu Yumoto Onsen and OMaru Onsen, located at an elevation of 1,300 meters, are convenient options with relatively easy access.

6:00 PM – Dinner Along Nasu Kaito Road
After relaxing and refreshing yourself in the hot springs, it’s time to enjoy dinner on Nasu’s main street, Nasu Kaito Road.

7:30 PM – Head to the Cottage “PlaceToBe NasuMachi”
After dinner, it’s time to head to the cottage where you’ll be staying tonight.
This time, you’ll be staying at PlaceToBe NasuMachi, conveniently located for easy access to the center of Nasu.
Surrounded by greenery, it’s a beautiful cottage just a short distance from Nasu Safari Park.
The property has two buildings: ToriCommons, which can accommodate up to 7 guests, and Kaon, which can host up to 5 guests.
Unlike hotels, the cottages are rented out in their entirety, so you won’t have to worry about noise from neighboring rooms, which is a great advantage.
The popular Yogibo space is available, along with appliances such as a washer with drying function, refrigerator, microwave, and rice cooker.

After a restful night at the cottage, it’s time to kick off day two of your trip.
Let’s dedicate this day to sightseeing with a focus on autumn’s must-see attraction: the beautiful fall foliage!
9:00 AM Tsutsuji Suspension Bridge for Autumn Foliage Viewing
Start the second day with the highlight of your autumn trip: admiring the stunning fall foliage.
While Nasu has several famous spots for autumn leaves, this time we recommend the Tsutsuji Suspension Bridge in Nasu Yumoto!
Located just past Sesshoseki and Nasu Onsen Shrine along Nasu Kaido, this 130-meter-long and 38-meter-high suspension bridge connects the Yawata Tsutsuji Grove with the Sesshoseki area.
In early summer, it’s known for its beautiful azaleas, but in autumn, you’ll be treated to vibrant views of the Nasu mountain range as it turns red and gold. The center of the bridge has a mesh design, allowing you to look down at the colorful leaves and Kurado River flowing below. (It might be a bit scary for those afraid of heights!)
There’s a free parking lot nearby, but it can get crowded during peak foliage season, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time.
If time allows, you can also visit two of Nasu’s most iconic spots: Sesshoseki and Nasu Onsen Shrine.

GOOD NEWS NEIGHBORS and GOOD NEWS DIARY are rapidly becoming popular as new hotspots in Nasu.
These facilities are operated by the venture company “GOOD NEWS,” which is known for producing Nasu’s popular souvenir, “Butter no Itoko.”
At GOOD NEWS NEIGHBORS, nine stores are currently in operation, including cafes, outdoor specialty shops, and dessert shops originating from Nasu.
At GOOD NEWS DIARY, five stores primarily focused on sweets and snacks are in operation.
Both facilities are themed around “SDGs” (Sustainable Development Goals), and they offer a wide range of upcycled products made from ingredients that would typically be discarded. The café also promotes sustainability by using reusable cups and composting coffee grounds.
For example, at BROWN CHEESE BROTHER, which is located in GOOD NEWS NEIGHBORS, they upcycle whey—a byproduct of cheese production—into a sweet treat called “Brown Cheese Brother.”
This initiative not only resonates with those who support the SDGs but also provides an opportunity for those who may not be as interested to consider environmental awareness through the company’s efforts.
